Sub-Saharan Africa is more heavily affected by HIV and AIDS than any other region of the world. An estimated 24.5 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2005 and approximately 2.7 million additional people were infected with HIV during that year.

In just the past year, the AIDS epidemic in Africa has claimed the lives of an estimated 2 million people in this region. More than twelve million children have been orphaned by AIDS: UNAIDS, '2006 Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic'

The primary goal of the HIV/AIDS Sensitization Program is to spread awareness, thereby reducing the number of new infections. The program aims to correct common misconceptions about HIV/AIDS and to ensure that individuals have accurate information, which will help them to make informed decisions.
