Millions of children do not have any books. On average, children in Africa have 0-1age appropriate books intheir homes. Many schools do not have a school library.

The home environment -specifically the availability of reading material is a stronger predictor of later academic achievement than soci-economic status.

Inability to read is linked to poverty, unemployment and crime

Access to printed materials has been found to be on the critical variables affecting reading aquisition.
Book Drive Background/ Vision
Research shows that the early years involve the highest rates of learning. The habits that children form at a young age will stay with them for a lifetime. Childhood is therefore the best time to introduce children to and immerse them in the habit of reading. This habit will help educate and inform throughout their lifespan. Developing a love of books and reading is an important first step for a child to developa love of learning in general. And when a child loves to learn, opportunities greatlyincrease.
The book drive will help do the following:
- Bring new focus on the literacy needs of children
- Find brand new books and used books and distribute them where they are most needed - In Africa
- Build local communities by askking those who have, to help those who are less fortunate.
- Introdcue students to fulfilling community services.
- Provide oopportunities for people who want to mae a difference
Goals:
- Our target is to send one million books to Africa by 2010. With your tireless support, sponsorship and invovlement we can do it.
- Engage students, schools, corporations and other organizations in gathering brand new books and used books for school libraries, classrooms and students in Africa
How You can help us:
- Raise the necessary funds to send books to Africa. We are asking for a dime (ten cents) along with each book to help cover some of the shipping costs to Africa.
- Run a book drive campaign in your school, church and or organization

Project Appeal and Campaign There is a dire need for educational books in West Africa. These books will make a real difference in enhancing their literacy / reading skills.Help Develop Africa Inc. send a container of one million children books to sponsor literacy efforts for kids ages 3-12 in Africa. The children's books will be distributed free to deserving children in schools. |

Population To Be Served: We will target the disadvantaged and under-developed children between the ages of 3-12 from a total family income of less than 300,000 Leones monthly or ($100 monthly) in schools. These schools are located in the eastern and western areas of Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone. We will distribute these books to the schools free, ensuring that children are the benefactors of these resources. |
Costs Involved : We need financial support to pay shipping, transportation costs, customs, clearing and distribution costs. To help cover such costs we are asking people to donate a dime (ten cents) with each book.
A Book and a Dime (ten cents) is what we request. We need your assistance to cover the costs involved, including shipping, clearing, distrbution etc. of a container of books to children in Africa.
