Develop Africa Partners with Common Cents and Receives Grant of $500

Develop Africa has partnered with Common Cents to provide service learning opportunities to school children.

Through this partnership, in May this year, the Students of PS/IS/09 in Brooklyn, NY, raised and donated $500 towards classrooms in Africa.  The Philanthropy Roundtable that made the decision and selected Develop Africa to receive this donation is Guap Getters. The donation was made in support of school classrooms in Africa.

Thank you Guap Getters for your support! We encourage children everywhere to collect their cents and pennies (and larger coins and bills / notes) to support development in Africa. We welcome your support.

DA is one of the approved organizations on the Penny Harvest / Common Cents website.  You can find DA by accessing the Common Cents website - http://www.commoncents.org/orgfinder/search.cfm and searching “Develop Africa.”

Common Cents

Develop Africa wishes to say a big "thank You" to the students who diligently raised the funds and decided to support education in Africa.  Thank you for your committment to Service!

“Common Cents is an educational, not-for-profit organization, which specializes in creating and managing service-learning programs for young people. Our most popular and best known program is the Penny Harvest, the largest child philanthropy program in the United States …

And since 1991, children between the ages of four and 14 have been converting their natural compassion for others into action by collecting pennies and turning those pennies into grants for community organizations. The Penny Harvest shows young people they have the ability to change the world by introducing them to the power of philanthropy and service during their formative years. As children help others, they develop their generosity and moral character, and they learn through practice the skills and responsibilities of democratic participation” (extracted from the Common Cents website).

Families in Sierra Leone face unprecedented challenges due to rising costs. Inflation makes it difficult for them to afford basic food staples such as rice, cooking oil, and onions.

Extending a helping hand can alleviate a significant burden and provide essential relief to the less fortunate.
