About Develop Africa

For 20 years, Develop Africa has helped children in Sierra Leone stay in school and build skills for the future. Since 2006, we have deployed more than $3.3 million in support, awarded 1,260+ scholarships, and delivered school supplies to 124,700+ children. Our computer labs in Freetown train hundreds of young people every year, including a lab at a girls' school run in partnership with FAWE Sierra Leone. We are a U.S. 501(c)(3) based in Johnson City, Tennessee, with a registered NGO and a local team in Sierra Leone. We hold Candid's 2026 Platinum Seal of Transparency.

Why now?

We are entering our next chapter: expanding computer training and building the visibility and funding base to sustain that growth. We are adding 1–2 board members who can help lead that work.

Who we're looking for

• Marketing and communications: branding, digital and social media, storytelling, or public relations
• Fundraising and networks: donor cultivation, corporate partnerships, foundation relationships, or event fundraising
• Strategic leadership: experience helping an organization grow, govern well, and sustain its impact
• Mission alignment: a real belief that education levels the playing field for children

Board experience is welcome but not required. Connection to Sierra Leone or West Africa is a plus, not a requirement.

What board members do

• Provide strategic oversight and help set direction with fellow directors
• Lead or support at least one visibility or fundraising effort each year
• Open doors to donors, companies, and partners in your network

The commitment

• 4 board meetings per year, held virtually
• About 2-10 hours per month
• A 3-year term, renewable
