Mentoring
In Sierra Leone, empowering youth goes beyond providing education — it equips them with the skills and knowledge necessary to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Mentoring sessions play a pivotal role in this process, helping boys and girls develop financial literacy, life skills, and health awareness while fostering motivation, confidence, and resilience.
Mentoring is a guiding light for young people navigating challenging life transitions — offering support in dealing with change at home, critical decision-making, problem-solving, and the journey toward adulthood. Through mentoring, youth are empowered to grow into the best versions of themselves, overcoming internal challenges and setting ambitious goals for their future.
Research consistently shows that mentored youth demonstrate better school attendance, a higher likelihood of pursuing higher education, and a more positive attitude toward school than their non-mentored peers. Mentoring also strengthens social attitudes, peer relationships, and communication with parents — building the whole person, not just the student.
At Develop Africa, our mentors generously volunteer their time to guide and inspire young people — opening their eyes to what is possible and helping them envision a future they have the power to build.
"A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself." — Oprah Winfrey
Girls' and Boys' Mentoring Sessions
Develop Africa launched its girls' mentoring program in 2021 to equip girls and young women with essential life skills, confidence, and a forward-looking mindset. The success of the program prompted an expansion to include boys' mentoring sessions in 2022. Both programs now run as monthly sessions covering a wide range of topics — from self-esteem and goal-setting to financial literacy, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
By investing in mentoring alongside education, we are helping break the cycle of poverty and building a generation of resilient, informed leaders who will positively influence their communities and nation.
"The best teachers are those who show you where to look — but don't tell you what to see." — Alexandra K. Trenfor
