The Village

join the village - make a difference in Africa

"It takes a village to raise a child" ~ African proverb

This apt proverb summarizes the thought that it takes a dedicated caring community to raise a child. All the adults in the community contribute in some way to the raising of a child.  Regardless of a child's biological parents, its upbringing belongs to the community. “A child does not grow up only in a single home.” The Africanist perspective is more about community, it's more about collaboration.  It's about collective social responsibility. We would like to see that spirit embraced by participating in uplifting those in our world village that need a hand up.

It takes a village to raise a child is an African proverb which means that it takes an entire community of different people interacting with children in order for a child to experience and grow in a safe environment. The villages would look out for the children. (Wikipedia)

The basic meaning is that child upbringing is a communal effort. The responsibility for raising a child is shared with the larger family (sometimes called the extended family). Everyone in the family participates especially the older children, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and even cousins. It is not unusual for African children to stay for long periods with their grandparents or aunts or uncles. Even the wider community gets involved such as neighbors and friends. ... In general this ... proverb conveys the African worldview that emphasizes the values of family relationships, parental care, self-sacrificing concern for others, sharing, and even hospitality. (www.Afriprov.org)

In modern-day society, we see this view reflected in part in Corporate Social Responsibility where companies are expected to do their part in supporting nonprofit organizations doing good.

It takes a village.  That includes everyone. That includes YOU.  Individuals, families, organizations, companies, etc.  We are all the village that is raising children.
