Eclipse-Like Conditions Prevail in Africa - Help By Providing Safe and Renewable Solar Lights

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has predicted that on the 21st of August, 2017, something unusual and phenomenal is likely to be witnessed on earth. The sun will disappear briefly causing the day to turn into night.

This eclipse is a once in a lifetime occurrence as the last one in the United States was almost forty years ago. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. This narrow path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun's tenuous atmosphere - the corona - can be seen, will stretch from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. In other parts of the world, however, the eclipse might not be as fascinating as it is here in the United States - because of their familiarity with darkness.

Many less privileged communities in Africa lack basic amenities like electricity. Consequently, they are familiar with not having any light at night. Other communities are connected to the electricity grid, but with an unreliable supply of power. So the unavailability of power or light at night could range from a few hours each night to all night hours on every night

Consequently, more than 10,000 kids in Sierra Leone study at night using local lamps like kerosene lantern and open candle flames. They study in "eclipse-like" conditions, with their eyes straining to read in the semi-darkness. Studying in these low-light conditions has adversely affected the eyesight of many students.

To make this "eclipse" a temporary occurrence for these communities, we at Develop Africa are providing safe, renewable, solar-powered lights to children and families in Africa.

You, too, can help make Africa a brighter place by helping in this effort. You can make a big difference in the lives of kids who will truly appreciate your generosity.

Families in Sierra Leone face unprecedented challenges due to rising costs. Inflation makes it difficult for them to afford basic food staples such as rice, cooking oil, and onions.

Extending a helping hand can alleviate a significant burden and provide essential relief to the less fortunate.
