Ensuring the Effectiveness of Vocational / Skills Training - Trainee Evaluation
Sierra Leone - One of our concerns is ensuring that our vocational / skills training trainees benefit the most from the training we provide. Late last year, in partnership with AID-SL, we held a "training validation and assessment" at the training centre to ensure the trainees are retaining the knowledge and experience. Materials for the production of both male and female dress, soap making etc were provided by Develop Africa.

Tailoring and Dressmaking: Sixteen trainees participated in the training sessions. These are trainees who have gone through the training curriculum and are awaiting final examination for the award of certificates. The training sessions took of the form of an examination of knowledge trainees may have gained during their tenure at the Training Centre and to ascertain the level of knowledge of skills acquired. Training instructors gave on the spot guidelines and supervision during the training sessions. Trainees demonstrated the level of knowledge so far acquired during their stay at the Centre in line with the national curriculum. Trainees were also able to demonstrate their preparedness for the final examination for the award of a National Diploma by the National Council for Technical and Vocational Training under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

Hairdressing – Participants in this sector were exposed to new hairdressing skills that will equip with the required hairdressing skills to meet the demands of modern times. They were also exposed to hairdressing skills of yester years to further meet the demands of older women folks. Six trainees participated in the training sessions.

Soap making was a new skill that was introduced to the Centre using funds provided by DA. Five trainees participated in the training sessions. An expatriate on soap making was contracted to supervise the session. Trainees were exposed to basic skills in soap making and also other household detergents.

Thanks to Our Donors: Trainees expressed gratitude for the training received and pleaded for an extension of training duration and for such training to be conducted on a regular basis.
