Preparing Students Beyond IT: Resume Tips at Develop Africa

At Develop Africa, our mission goes beyond teaching technical skills. We believe that preparing students for real-world opportunities requires a combination of IT knowledge, career readiness, and mentorship. One critical part of this preparation is helping students create strong, professional resumes.

The Resume Session:

Last year, at the Develop Africa Computer Lab, Daniel, our Head of IT, led an impromptu session on resume building. Students had the chance to ask questions, and Daniel shared practical tips on what to include in a resume: highlighting responsibilities, achievements, and experiences that make students stand out to employers.

He emphasized showing the full scope of what students have done, from technical work like computer maintenance to teamwork and project involvement. Students learned how detailing their roles and responsibilities helps employers understand their qualities and potential.

Why Resume Skills Matter:

A resume is more than a list of past activities: it’s a tool to showcase skills, problem-solving abilities, and work ethic. By teaching students how to present their experiences clearly and effectively, Develop Africa equips them to pursue higher education, professional opportunities, and career advancement with confidence.

Student Engagement:

The session was highly interactive. Students could ask questions about how to build a compelling resume, clarify which experiences to highlight, and receive personalized advice. This approach demonstrates how Develop Africa integrates mentorship with IT training, giving students practical guidance for their professional futures.

Impact:

By providing sessions like this, Develop Africa helps students translate the skills they learn in the lab into real-world success. Combining technical skills with career readiness ensures students are prepared not only for IT roles but also for broader educational and professional opportunities.

On November 20th, this movement placed over 100,000 pencils into the hands

of children across Sierra Leone in 20 schools.

Each pencil tells a story — of hope, opportunity, and possibility.

Education is more than lessons — it’s liberation.
