Schools Scheduled to Reopen in March - Ebola Crisis

We are so happy to report that schools in Sierra Leone will reopen in March after being closed for eight months due to the Ebola outbreak. Students have been off from school for nearly a year.

Fatamata - happy scholarship beneficiary africa girlThe reopening of schools is a sign that the tide is turning against the Ebola crisis. The World Health Organization recently reported that Ebola cases are rapidly decreasing. The number of new cases has declined steadily over the past 5 weeks.  The outbreak has been the worst on record, with Sierra Leone being the most affected.

To ensure a safe environment, chlorinated water for disinfecting will be made available in schools. One of the first signs of having the virus is a high temperature. So, teachers have been trained to use thermometers to monitor student temperatures.

When school reopens, we need to start strong by providing scholarships, uniforms and school supplies for up to a hundred new children. About 40 of these children have been orphaned during this crisis.  Can you join us in providing the gift of education to deserving children - such as Fatmata (pictured)?  This is the best way to help the children recover from this crisis as they go back to school.

Should you be interested in supporting a specific child and communicating with that child, please let us know and we will provide a few profiles of children looking for a scholarship.

Thanks so much for YOUR support as we prepare for a strong and great school year!

Make a Difference Today: Donate to the Year of the Pencil Campaign

On November 20th, this movement placed over 100,000 pencils into the hands

of children across Sierra Leone in 20 schools.

Each pencil tells a story — of hope, opportunity, and possibility.

Education is more than lessons — it’s liberation.

Every $25 helps children write their dreams.
