Solar Buddy Lights Arrive in Sierra Leone to Help Students Study Safely After Dark

Sylvester Renner, Founder and President of Develop Africa Holding A Solar Buddy Lamp

Reliable lighting is something many people take for granted. Yet for thousands of families across Sierra Leone, the loss of electricity or the absence of a reliable power supply is part of daily life.

When darkness falls, students often face a difficult choice. They either stop studying altogether or rely on candles and kerosene lamps that produce smoke, pose fire risks, and provide poor lighting for reading and homework.

That is why Develop Africa is excited to announce the arrival of a new shipment of Solar Buddy lights through our partnership with Solar Buddy. These solar-powered lights will soon be distributed to students and families across Sierra Leone, helping children study safely after sunset while reducing dependence on unsafe lighting sources.

A Partnership That Brings Hope

At Develop Africa, we work to remove barriers that prevent children from reaching their full potential. Access to education is about more than classrooms and textbooks. Students also need the basic tools that allow them to succeed.

One challenge many communities across Sub-Saharan Africa continue to face is unreliable electricity.

Power outages caused by transmission failures or problems with the national grid can leave entire communities without electricity for hours—or even days.

For students, this often means homework goes unfinished and valuable study time is lost.

Our partnership with Solar Buddy helps address this challenge by providing dependable, solar-powered lighting that students can use wherever they live.

Every Solar Light Has Been Tested

Before distribution begins, every Solar Buddy light underwent careful testing after arriving in Freetown.

Develop Africa staff ensured each light was fully functional before it reached the hands of beneficiaries.

Several staff members and beneficiaries also tested the lights in real home environments.

The early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

The lights provide two brightness settings and feature an advanced solar panel capable of charging efficiently, even when sunlight conditions are less than ideal.

Why Solar Lights Matter

For many students, daylight determines when learning stops.

Without electricity, homework often becomes impossible after sunset.

Some families turn to candles or kerosene lamps, which create additional challenges.

These lighting sources can:

  • Produce harmful smoke
  • Increase indoor air pollution
  • Create fire hazards
  • Provide limited visibility for studying

Solar lighting offers a safer and cleaner alternative.

Students can continue reading, completing assignments, and preparing for examinations long after the sun goes down.

More Than Convenience—A Matter of Safety

Reliable lighting is not only about education.

It can also save lives.

Recently, a family connected with Develop Africa tragically lost four members in a nighttime fire. While the exact cause of the fire has not been confirmed, the tragedy serves as a reminder of the risks many families face when relying on candles or other open-flame lighting sources.

Providing safe solar lighting helps reduce these risks while giving families a dependable source of illumination each evening.

Thousands of students could benefit from dependable lighting that allows them to study safely, improve academic performance, and reduce exposure to dangerous lighting sources.

Every solar light placed in a student's hands creates another opportunity for learning.
