Jared is a young man who decided that he wanted to help make a difference. He set up a fundraiser called Jared's pencils and is working to raise funds and collect pencils.
Jared says "I have chosen this project because the struggle that the kids in Africa have with education concerns me, and I want to make it easier for them to learn. "
YOUR donations helped Saffie launch a new business during the current Ebola crisis. 3 months ago with provided funds, she started to sell or retail charcoal. She buys bags of coals in bulk and then distributes this to customers in the Wellington community. Charcoal is a widely used cooking fuel - with a steady, on-going demand. Typically all houses cook daily.
After a 7 month pilot Solar Light project (since May 1, 2014), we are delighted to report that the feasibility study has confirmed viability. The 6 solar lights that we provided to the youths pictured are performing very well.
The youths that benefited were excited to have the solar lights. They spoke about the safety and durability of the lights. “More preferable to other lights” one of the youths said. The youths that were not fortunate to get one have pleaded with us to provide for them next time.
We are so happy to report that schools in Sierra Leone will reopen in March after being closed for eight months due to the Ebola outbreak. Students have been off from school for nearly a year.
As a team, we feel really good about a recent victory that we accomplished with your support.
Make a Difference Today: Donate to the Year of the Pencil Campaign
On November 20th, this movement placed over 100,000 pencils into the hands
of children across Sierra Leone in 20 schools.
Each pencil tells a story — of hope, opportunity, and possibility.
Education is more than lessons — it’s liberation.
Every $25 helps children write their dreams.
