Can you imagine trying to do homework or read a book with no light? Most children in Africa have to deal with this problem every evening. For tens of thousands of kids and youths living in Sierra Leone, power cuts are unfortunately "normal". At night, for lighting, they have no choice but to use kerosene lanterns and open-flame candles. The smoke from these light sources is hazardous to their health. The flames are also a fire hazard.
After a meeting with the FAWE school authorities, the launch date for the eReaders was set for 12th May 2015. This event was scaled down to an internal event due to restrictions on public gatherings - as a result of the Ebola crisis.
FAWE teachers, pupils and board members were present at the launching ceremony. There were about 80 people in attendance.
Alfred (pictured) happy shows us his new solar light. He is using this solar light to read and study at night. This light makes a huge difference - helping Alfred to safely study at night.
